The Takeaway

Brief interactions with artificial intelligence have a measurable and lasting impact on how people judge right from wrong. Participants in this study shifted their foundational moral views after just one session with a bot. These psychological changes did not fade away over time but intensified during the fourteen-day follow-up period. Most people assume they are in control of their own values and would notice such a drastic influence. This discovery means that subtle machine interactions can permanently alter human ethics without the user ever detecting the manipulation.

From the abstract

Moral judgements form the foundation of human social behavior and societal systems. While Artificial Intelligence chatbots increasingly serve as personal advisors, their influence on moral judgments remains largely unexplored. Here, we examined whether directive AI conversations shift moral evaluations using a within-subject naturalistic paradigm. Fifty-three participants rated moral scenarios, then discussed four with a chatbot prompted to shift moral judgments and four with a control agent. Th
