Replacing traditional hospital staff with experienced midwife-doulas slashed the rate of C-sections in a Chinese hospital from 51% to less than 10%.

China has one of the highest rates of cesarean deliveries in the world, often due to high patient volume and lack of personalized support. A large-scale study found that when experienced midwives provide one-on-one doula-style support, the need for surgical intervention drops by over 40 percentage points. This massive change was achieved without any new drugs or surgical technologies. The MidiDoula model focuses on physical comfort and emotional support during labor, which leads to better outcomes for both mothers and babies. It proves that the human element of medical care is often more powerful than the most advanced technology.
