The Takeaway

Economic dynamics are often seen as a chaotic result of human choices and social forces. New models show that prices and value are actually emergent properties of interacting fields governed by an action principle. This approach uses the same mathematical foundation as quantum field theory and general relativity. It suggests that the economy follows deep physical laws that are predictable and rigorous. Economists have long looked for social explanations when the answer might be purely mathematical. This discovery could unify the study of the physical world with the study of human markets.

From the abstract

We construct a field-theoretic framework in which economic dynamics emerge from an action principle defined on a differentiable manifold. The theory does not assume economic primitives such as price, value, or exchange. Instead, these quantities arise from the dynamics of interacting fields describing production, labor, and distribution. The formulation introduces propagation structures that define effective metrics, whose compatibility condition generates price dynamics. Instabilities correspon
