Liquid alkali metal can clear a deadly blood clot in less than 90 seconds by triggering controlled micro-explosions inside the vein.

Current treatments for strokes and heart attacks rely on chemical drugs that take a long time to work and often cause dangerous internal bleeding. This radical new approach uses an injectable liquid metal system that generates localized heat and tiny mechanical blasts to physically dissolve the blockage. In testing, it cleared clots in about a minute and a half, which is drastically faster than any existing medication. The process does not damage the blood vessel walls or lead to the bleeding risks associated with traditional blood thinners. This could become a life-saving tool for emergency rooms to stop heart attacks and strokes almost instantly.

Thrombotic vascular diseases contribute to significant global mortality, yet current therapeutic strategies face persistent challenges including bleeding risks, suboptimal efficiency, and procedural complexity. Here, we report a micro-explosive thermochemical thrombolysis (METCT) therapy via injectable liquid alkali metal (LAM) encapsulated in dimethyl silicone (LAM@oil), which enables prompt, efficient and safe vascular recanalization within an ultrafast timeframe (< 90 seconds). This LAM@oil s
