A 35 dollar sensor turns a farmer's daily truck route into a high tech data network.

Large-scale soil monitoring usually requires expensive, power-hungry wireless networks that are hard to maintain in rural areas. This new platform uses solar energy to power battery-free sensors that communicate directly with existing farm vehicles. As the farmer drives past, the sensors upload their data to a mobile base station on the truck. This setup removes the need for infrastructure and cuts the cost of smart farming by thousands of dollars. It makes precision agriculture accessible to small-scale farmers for the first time.
