Madeira cockroaches keep a perfect daily schedule even after the genetic master clock in their brains is completely dismantled.
Biology textbooks have taught for decades that a specific loop of proteins acts as the sole engine for every living creature's internal rhythm. These Madeira cockroaches still wake up and move on a strict 24 hour cycle after their genetic code was altered to wipe out those exact proteins. This discovery breaks the fundamental model of how life tracks time. It suggests there is a hidden secondary clock mechanism operating deep within cells that has remained invisible to science until now. Future sleep and jet lag treatments might need to target an entirely different biological system than the one currently in the spotlight.
